BANNERS - 12 Top Hip Papers of 2024-10

Looking back at 2024 at DrAlisonGrimaldi.com & what's in store for 2025!

Wow! Another action packed year in the clinic, online and on the road, working on moving the needle forward on all things hip! My husband and I are into our 20th year of running our physiotherapy clinic, PhysioTec in Brisbane, Australia. What a ride it's been, and still the passion is strong. We've got a fantastic crew of clinicians, and I always love coming back to the clinic after a trip to re-engage with my team.

This year, I've had 6 weeks travelling and teaching in the UK & Europe and another 3 week trip to North America, with other Aussie and online workshops, and Hip Academy events throughout the year. In between, I continue to work on developing resources for dralisongrimaldi.com and for Hip Academy, and contributing to research and paper writing. I also had opportunity to present at, and attend IFOMPT and ISHA conferences, with some great takeaways - always learning!

If you'd like to hear more about my activities this year and what's planned for 2025, here are the key highlights:

Let others know why you like dralisongrimaldi.com

I have had some lovely feedback on my teaching travels this year - health professionals letting me know how much they value my website and social media content, and how it has changed their clinical practice in a very positive way.

I'd love to know if you have found value from all the work that I put into bringing this high-quality information to you.

5-star reviews on Google help to improve the reach of a website, so I can also help other professionals and people with hip pain. If you have a spare minute to write just a couple of sentences, I'd really appreciate your review!

Research & Writing in 2024

While research and paper writing is a lot of work, it's something that I love to keep engaged in. I believe strongly in the role of clinicians within research teams, to assist in developing clinically relevant questions and interpretation of results. I've been volunteering my time in the pursuit of more answers for clinicians for over 20 years now.  Here are a few papers we've published this year, and what's in the pipeline.

International Scientific Tendinopathy Symposium Consensus: the development of a core outcome set for gluteal tendinopathy

This paper was the culmination of many years work - a scoping review, an appraisal of GT PROM clinimetrics, 2 online surveys of experts and a final consensus meeting. You can find out more in the 12 Hip Days of Christmas - this paper will feature on the 1st Hip Day of Christmas.

Fearon AM, Grimaldi A, Mellor R, Nasser AM, Fitzpatrick J, Ladurner A; COS-GT consensus group; Vicenzino B. ICON 2020-International Scientific Tendinopathy Symposium Consensus: the development of a core outcome set for gluteal tendinopathy. Br J Sports Med. 2024 Mar 8;58(5):245-254.

Clinimetrics: The Victorian Institute of Sport Questionnaire - gluteal tendinopathy (VISA-G)

This was a short piece by Dr Anthony Nasser and myself that appraised the clinimetrics (usefulness) of the VISA-G patient rated outcome measure for gluteal tendinopathy.

Current and future advances in practice: tendinopathies of
the hip

And this 4000 word invited clinical masterclass as part of a series on current and future advances in tendinopathy practice - targeted at the rheumatology community, but open access and useful for all clinicians.

Our paper focused on gluteal and proximal hamstring tendinopathy.  Huge thanks to Dr. Anthony Nasser for his contribution on this one, and always great to work with Prof. David Hunter and Prof. Bill Vicenzino.

Grimaldi A, Mellor R, Nasser A, Vicenzino B, Hunter DJ. Current and future advances in practice: tendinopathies of the hip. Rheumatol Adv Pract. 2024 Apr 10;8(2):rkae022.

I have also just submitted another invited review on Gluteal Tendinopathy for Musculoskeletal Science and Practice, together with my co-authors Dr Tony Nasser and Dr Charlotte Ganderton - we have put a bit of a different spin on this one, so keep an eye out for it in 2025.

There are also 2 more papers from the LEAP trial data nearing completion, with some interesting data on imaging and functional impacts of gluteal tendinopathy. It takes a while for papers to make it through the pipeline, but I'm hoping they will also make it into the literature in 2025.

Angie Fearon, Tony Nasser, Charlotte Ganderton, Bill Vicenzino and even my daughter Annie (now going into her last year of medicine), are continuing to work on the problem of outcome measures for gluteal tendinopathy.

I'm also continuing to work on the CREATE study - developing credible explanation of tendinopathy. We're almost through phase 1 of this study, which involved collecting and collating patient feedback on the current education they have been receiving and what they feel is missing. We should be moving into our next phase in the new year.

Helen French and her local team have enrolled all participants in our LEAP Ireland feasibility trial collaboration (well done Helen!!), so we should be getting some results collated and papers written in 2025.

And there are a few other projects that I am collaborating on or hoping to bring together, so we'll see what the future holds for next year!

2024 Conferences

This year has been wonderful to continue to travel and attend in-person conferences—there's something special about connecting face-to-face with colleagues! I’ve really enjoyed networking and sharing ideas with other passionate clinicians and researchers.

In 2024, I noticed a real resurgence of enthusiasm for face-to-face learning and networking - it's great to see. It's always such an exciting atmosphere to have a large group of the most engaged research and clinical minds all under the same roof! Love it!

IFOMPT 2024 - world conference of musculoskeletal and manual physical therapy, Basel, Switzerland, July 2024

  • Pre-conference 1 day workshop - Mastering Lateral Hip Pain. I always love the IFOMPT workshops, as there is also a fantastic assortment of clinicians from all over the world. It really feels like an international collaboration to help people with hip pain!
  • Greater trochanteric pain syndrome (GTPS): Integrating new evidence into clinical practice –a focused symposium, Angie Fearon, Alison Grimaldi, Stephanie Woodley, Helen French - It was fun to catch up with this team and share a little of our GTPS love with others.

ISHA (Hip Preservation Society) Annual Scientific Meeting, Washington DC, United States, October 2024

  • Injury prevention in the hip: Where are we and where do we need to go? The problem is in the CAM. It wasDr Rintje Agricola, Dr Josip (Chuck) Cakic, Dr Alison Grimaldi, and chairs - Dr Henry Ellis and Dr Yi-Meng Yen.
  • It was great to contribute to this session, and join the panel discussion about the problem of cam morphology.
  • It was great to just indulge in a hip-only conference! While the focus was surgery, it was great to see where our medical colleagues are now, and where they are going. Helpful insights into what we should understand and where we should be headed from a rehab perspective.

This year I also held my Mastering Movement of the Hip & Pelvis workshop  in Brisbane, with both local and remote clinicians attending.

2024 North American Teaching Tour

I headed to North America later in this year. It was lovely to visit North America in the autumn this year - with the leaves turning red and yellow, and preparations for winter starting!

In Vancouver, I presented a Lateral Hip Pain evening Masterclass, followed by my Anterior Hip and Groin Pain 1-day Practical workshop. Another great turn out! And fantastic to catch up with hosts, Prof Karim Khan and Ass Prof Clare Ardern, UBC/Editor-in-chief JOSPT.

Afterwards I headed across to the ISHA conference in Washington (mentioned above, and on to New York for 2-days of teaching at Knosis Physiotherapy & Wellness, where I presented a 2-day Mastering Movement of the Hip and Pelvis Workshop with a Clinical Reasoning Day - live patient demonstrations.

2024 UK - Europe Teaching Tour

My UK - Europe teaching tour for 2024 was very busy! It started off by heading to the UK, where I got to speak at a Haemophilia conference (rehab after iliopsoas bleeds). I then commenced my teaching tour which included; 2 days of teaching in Norway, 2 days in Birmingham, 3 days in London, and 1 day in both Windsor and Ipswich. What a trip! I look forward to heading back in both March and May of 2025!

Foot and Ankle Practical Workshop

In 2024 we held another Foot and Ankle practical workshop in Brisbane! It was a great day talking about muscle and movement of the feet and ankles.

During this workshop, participants discovered toes do a lot more than fill up your toebox! Check out what some attendees had to say below!

Thanks to Dr Melinda Smith for a fantastic and highly practical workshop. A huge thank you to everyone who attended this practical workshop! It was great meeting you all.

I know some people missed out this year - sorry, we were absolutely maxed out with a wait list. Hope to meet more of you next year! Get in quick to join us next year.

Foot and Ankle Workshop Testimonials!

The foot and ankle workshop was great! I registered since it's an area of the body where you don't see as many courses being offered, and it's presented by such reputable names from the physio world.

Mel was a great presenter- enthusiastic, friendly, and up-to-date on the latest research.

The small group size was perfect for the practical sessions and the online material allows me to go through it at my own pace without having to take heaps of time off from work to attend- the best of both worlds.

I would absolutely recommend the course to anyone interested in learning a bit more about foot and ankle mechanics and rehab.

Georgia • Gold Coast • Accredited Exercise Physiologist at Making Strides

Thank you for your amazing "mastering the foot and ankle" course. I have been looking for (many) years for a specific functional foot intrinsic course, and this exceeded my expectations.

I went in with many questions, and this course answered all of them, and more. I work with patients of all ages, and the sporting cohort, and I work along side foot surgeons. Having this broader knowledge is so comforting. Knowing exactly how to asses, what that means, the dose of exercise, and what best EBP we can share with our patients, and surgeons.

I HIGHLY recommend this for all physiotherapists, podiatrists and surgeons that work with our lower limb cohort of patients.
